YTC America Inc. (YTCA), the North American corporate research and development center of Yazaki Corporation, Japan is seeking a talented and highly motivated individual to fill the research staff position within its Polymers R&D Group.
The individual will be a key member of the laboratory’s research staff and will work to advance the fundamental knowledge base and core competencies of the Company in the area of polymers, will support potential product and process development activities, and will work in an interdisciplinary team and in coordination with other core competency areas within the Company.
The individual will be responsible for the development of biopolymers through a broad range of polymer-related activities such as their synthesis, processing, characterization, and analysis of polymer structure-property relationships. Polymers of specific interest are bio-based polymers. Focus will be on developing formulations of biopolymers and with various tailored functional properties such as mechanical strength, environmental stability, and thermal conductivity under the aspect of obtaining lower carbon-emissions. A chemical synthesis lab, analytical chromatography and spectroscopy equipment, and key processing equipment such as a twin-screw compounder and an injection-molding machine are available. The emphasis will be on transitioning the laboratory scale synthesis process to kilogram level scale-up via a pilot plant process development effort. The synthesized polymer pellets will be tested in extrusion and injection molding machines for meeting various application specific property requirements, ultimate objective being replacement of current fossil fuel derived polymers Yazaki uses in various product lines.
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in chemistry with a specialty in polymer science, strong academic credentials, at least five (5) years of successful polymer R&D experience in an established laboratory, and a proven track record of success as evidenced by lead author publications, patents and/or industrial commercialization of R&D prototypes. The ideal candidate should have a broad background encompassing an understanding of synthesis, characterization, and processing of polymers. The successful candidate should be innovative, analytical and methodical in problem solving, dynamic, pro-active, able to learn from new challenges on a continuous basis, driven to produce tangible results, and a good team player.
The position requires interactions with technical staff members on the research and product development side of the Company and hands-on work, a can-do attitude, and strong written and oral communication skills.
