Research Staff – Aluminum Corrosion Scientist

Job Description:

YTC America Inc. (YTCA), the North American corporate research and development center of Yazaki Corporation, Japan is seeking a talented and highly motivated individual to fill the research staff position within its Renewable Energy R&D Group.

Responsibility

The individual will be a key member of the Company’s research staff and will work to advance the fundamental knowledge base and core competencies of the Company in the area of metal corrosion, will support potential product and process development activities, and will work in an interdisciplinary team and in coordination with other core competency areas within the Company.

The individual will be responsible for the investigation of the oxide/hydroxide formation, embrittlement, and hydrogen evolution as part of metal corrosion processes. In particular, the research is aimed to study the interaction of various aluminum alloys in contact with other metals in aqueous media. The goal is to qualitatively and quantitatively study the kinetics and thermodynamics of corrosion processes through a broad range of activities such as the investigation of physical and chemical phase boundaries, grain boundary diffusion processes, and chemical analysis of corrosion products. Metallography, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and chemical spectroscopy equipment are available. Emphasis will be on applying laboratory scale findings to real world environmental conditions and scenarios.

Requirements

The candidate should have a Ph.D. in material science, chemical engineering, metallurgy, electrochemistry, or inorganic chemistry, strong academic credentials, at least five (5) years of successful R&D experience in an established industrial or academic laboratory, and a proven track record of success as evidenced by lead author publications, patents and/or industrial commercialization of R&D prototypes. The ideal candidate should have a broad background encompassing metallurgical knowledge related to metal corrosion and metal embrittlement, the analysis of volatile and non-volatile corrosion products such as hydrogen, hydroxides, and oxides, and should have engaged in research of non-ferrous alloys, such as aluminum alloys and copper alloys. The successful candidate should be innovative, analytical and methodical in problem solving, dynamic, pro-active, able to learn from new challenges on a continuous basis, driven to produce tangible results, and a good team player.

The position requires interactions with technical staff members on both the research and product development sides of the Company and hands-on work, a can-do attitude, and strong written and oral communication skills.

Salary Range: $100,000 – $130,000 – YTCA considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, total compensation and a candidate’s qualifications, key skills, work experience, education, and training.
